Discover some of the most breathtaking landscapes on earth : the Danakil Depression, Erta Ale Lava Lake, one of the most permanent lava lake on earth, active volcanoes with boiling lava lakes, lava fields, extraordinary landscapes with different colors of minerals, salt fields, sulfur fields, hot springs and more. On this expedition, you will have a lava trek to visit one of few most permanent lava lakes on the planet, Erta Ale. You will also have the chance to witness an ancient tradition of extracting salt from the salt fields and transporting the salt bars with endless lines of camel caravan for days from the depression to the highland towns. You will also discovery the east part of Ethiopia with the medieval walled city of Harar and Dire Dawa. Harar is considered to be the fourth most sacred center of the Islamic world.
This 10-day Ethiopian tour provides an immersive experience into the country’s rich history, culture, and diverse landscapes. Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, you’ll be welcomed at the airport and transferred to your hotel. If your flight lands in the morning, you’ll embark on a city tour to explore Addis Ababa’s key attractions. On Day 2, you will fly to Mekele and then drive to Hawzien. On the way, you'll visit the impressive Abune Yemata rock-hewn church. You’ll spend the night at Gheralta Lodge.
Day 3 is dedicated to visiting the remarkable Yohannes Maequdi and Abreha Atbeha rock-hewn churches. These ancient churches are carved into the cliffs, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. On Day 4, you’ll continue your journey from Hawzien to Hamedela, visiting the deepest point of the Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and most extreme places on Earth. Overnight camping allows you to fully experience the desert landscape.
Day 5 takes you to the Erta Ale volcano, where you’ll trek up to the crater to witness the active lava lake at night, a truly unforgettable experience. Afterward, you’ll head to Afdera, where you'll explore the salt lake and unique formations. On Day 6, you’ll drive from Erta Ale to Afdera and camp again, surrounded by the vast desert scenery.
On Day 7, you’ll drive to Awash National Park, where you'll have a late-afternoon game drive. The park is known for its diverse wildlife and scenic landscapes. You’ll stay overnight at Awash Falls Lodge. Day 8 involves a drive from Awash to Harar, where you’ll experience the unique hyena feeding show. You’ll overnight at the Samerat Hotel in Dire Dawa.
Day 9 is a day for exploration in Harar, including a visit to the famous chat market in Aweday and a tour of Harar’s old city, Jugol, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You’ll also visit the Rimbaud House and various museums before returning to Dire Dawa for the night.
On Day 10, you’ll either drive or fly back to Addis Ababa, where you’ll have a final chance for shopping or sightseeing, depending on time. In the evening, a traditional farewell dinner with Ethiopian dances will conclude your journey. Afterward, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your departure.
